EVACUATION PROCEDURES


Fire
extinguishers are available in various areas in the school – see
attached map.
Aim:
To evacuate all students, visitors and staff in an organised and
controlled movement from a threatened or danger area to a safe
area in the minimum possible time and exposing them to the least
possible risk.
Implementation:
-
Each classroom teacher will have
procedures and map of designated Evacuation Assembly Area
attached to the inside cover of their class roll.
-
Map of Evacuation Assembly Areas to be
placed on wall near exit door of each room.
-
Red Bags, containing all class lists,
whistle and a pen to be placed near doors in all rooms.
-
Each Support Teacher, Office Staff,
General Assistant and personnel working in the school (Band
Conductors, Scripture Teachers, Canteen Supervisor, Before
and After School Care staff) will be issued with a copy of
procedures and map.

A Casual Teacher package will include the
procedures and the map.
-
Emergency phone numbers will be clearly
marked next to each telephone in the school.

Disaster Procedures will be advertised
annually in the school newsletter, Gardeners Road Gazette.
-
Two evacuation drills will be conducted
each year, one on full notice to staff and students, the
other on partial notice to staff and students.
-
Staff will have training in the use of
fire extinguishers.
Evacuation Procedures
Teachers will:
-
Collect rolls and/or Red Bag.
-
Close doors of classroom on leaving.
-
Supervise the movement of their students
in a quiet and orderly fashion via the shortest possible
safe route to the assigned Evacuation Assembly Area.

N.B. Students are not to take their
school bag with them.
At the designated Evacuation Assembly Area
teachers will:
-
Line up students in two lines per class.
-
Call the roll to account for all
students.
-
Inform an Assistant Principal of any
missing students.
-
After rolls have been checked the class
teacher, or teacher in charge of the group at that time, is
to keep their group together and wait for thePrincipal to
verify student numbers and give the all clear to return to
classrooms.
Assistant Principals:
Check buildings A (upstairs) B and C.

Assistant Principals will check with
class teachers in Years K – 6 Evacuation Assembly Area that
all students are accounted for, then communicate with
Principal.
Principal:
Check buildings A (downstairs).

Principal will check with class teachers
in Evacuation Assembly Area that all students are accounted
for and after communication with Assistant Principals will
decide upon action to be taken.
Office Staff:
The Senior School Assistant will collect and remove:
-
The back up disks for both the Oasis and
the computer network.
-
An up to date set of class lists of
students’ names
-
A cordless telephone or mobile telephone.
-
Close doors in the Administration
Building
Then move to the Evacuation Assembly Area and stay there until
the all clear signal is given.
Teachers Aides
will:
-
Assist teachers clear the classrooms and
close doors
-
Move to the Evacuation Assembly Area
Principal will:
-
Phone the police / fire brigade.
-
Collect cordless phone or mobile
-
Check that buildings (as listed below)
have been vacated and that doors have been closed.
Evacuation during Non Class Time
All students and adults are to immediately proceed to the
nearest Evacuation Assembly Area when the siren sounds, or in
the case of fire, - when the fire is first observed or the siren
sounds (whichever occurs first).
All staff are to take Red Bag and immediately move to the
Evacuation Assembly Areas to undertake the supervision of
students.
Office Staff and Principals’ responsibilities remain the same.
STLA / ESL / Librarian / Language Teachers / RFF:
Teachers with withdrawal groups personally deliver each
child to the class teacher waiting in the designated safety
area.
STLA / ESL / Librarian / Language Teachers and RFF teachers take
the class to the designated area and await the class teacher who
will have the roll.
Band, Scripture and Before and After School
Care Staff will:
-
Leave building with any student/s they
are working with and move to Evacuation Assembly Area
-
Close doors as they leave the room
-
Hand student/s over to class teacher/s at
Evacuation Assembly Area and stay there until the all clear
signal is given.
Canteen Staff:
The Canteen supervisor will:
-
Ensure all staff and volunteers leave the
Canteen
-
Close doors on leaving
Move to the Evacuation Assembly Area and inform Assistant
Principal if any personnel are not accounted for.
