Peer Support

Introduction
All students participate in the Peer Support Anti-Bullying Program, "Together We Can Work It Out".

This program was developed to promote a culture of peace and democracy within primary school communities and to elicit a sense of optimism in students about their ability to effect positive change. It provides students with an understanding about what might motivate someone to practise bullying behaviours, and the means for finding ways to support people to change that behaviour. It focuses on all people affected by bullying behaviours.

This program contributes to the Peer Support Foundation ‘building safer communities’ initiative. The Foundation’s anti-violence strategy recognises that addressing bullying behaviours is a crucial element in ultimately decreasing violence in society.

Developing Leadership Skills

The Peer Support program provides an opportunity for all Stage 3 students to participate in meaningful leadership experiences. All Year 5 and Year 6 students, including students from the Support Unit, participate in 2 consecutive days of peer support leadership training.

The purpose of this training is to prepare students for their role as Peer Support leaders and to highlight the structure of the Peer Support Program. It also assists students in developing the skills which are necessary for the effective facilitation of Peer Support Groups.

Working Together
Since each Peer Support Group is made up of a mix of children from Kindergarten to Year 4, and run by trained leaders from Year 5 and 6, all students participate in cooperative group work. This builds strong student relationships between and across year groups, creating a safer, friendlier learning environment.
